This unit will address a variety of writing standards in Language Arts. Students will explore the nature of personal, expressive, narrative writing through a study of memoir. During the course of the unit, students will write their own memoir of their seventh grade experience. Through this composition, students will communicate their own personal struggles and triumphs using vivid imagery, specific tone, and extended metaphors.
Curriculum Framing Questions: Essential Question: How does an individual leave a positive legacy for those who follow?
Unit Questions: What legacy have I left for upcoming seventh graders? How are vivid details and colorful language used specifically in memoir? How can an author manipulate tone to communicate differently in his or her memoir?
Content Questions: How does symbolism deepen the understanding my reader achieves of my experiences in my memoir? How does point of view affect my reader's understanding of my experiences as a student?
